Detweiler, Lowell
June 11, 1936 - March 1, 2025

Lowell Detweiler, formerly of Michigan, Indiana, Newfoundland, Ohio, Alabama, Tanzania, Akron and Lititz, Pennsylvania, died at Landis Homes on Saturday, March 1, 2025 age 88. Lowell spent most of his life working and traveling in the service programs of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) and Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS). In his own words, he is now on his last trip to meet his beloved wife Ruth who passed away in 2020.

Born to Oren and Nettie Miller Detweiler, Lowell spent his younger years in Fairview, Michigan. He was educated as a teacher with a bachelor’s degree from Goshen College, Indiana and a master’s degree from Tuskegee Institute, Alabama. He taught for twelve years including MCC service assignments in Newfoundland, Canada and Tanzania, East Africa.

In 1957 he married Ruth Kauffman from West Liberty, Ohio. From 1959 to 1961 Ruth and Lowell taught in a two-room school in a rural fishing village in Newfoundland. They returned to live in West Liberty, OH and two children joined them. When Cheryl was six and Steve was three, they moved to Tanzania for three years serving with the MCC Teachers Abroad Program. In addition to teaching, they enjoyed East African safaris during vacations, and Lowell climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro during one Christmas break.

Following the Tanzania stint, he and his family returned in 1971 to work at the MCC headquarters in Akron, Pennsylvania. Lowell found purpose working in the Human Resource Department where over many years he had opportunity to invite hundreds of others to meaningful Christian service around the world. This provided opportunities to travel and visit MCC workers in many other countries, each journey making the world feel even larger. The family attended Akron Mennonite Church where he held numerous positions over the years.

In 1986 Lowell was invited to become Director of Mennonite Disaster Service. Leading this exciting network of volunteers in disaster response efforts became the focus of the next twelve years with projects in most states in the U.S and provinces of Canada. At the invitation of MCC, Lowell also traveled to assist in setting up earthquake response programs in Japan and Armenia. He often shared how the gratitude of hundreds of disaster survivors and the deep connections within the widespread Anabaptist volunteer network left his cup overflowing. Lowell gave heartfelt thanks to Ruth and the family for accepting his many absences from home.

In 1998 Lowell stepped down from MDS leadership to gather stories and write a book of the first fifty years of Mennonite Disaster Service. The resulting book “The Hammer Rings Hope” was the culmination of a life of service and a reminder that we all can bring HOPE to many through service to others. In the years since “his first retirement” Lowell had many roles and volunteer projects at MCC, MDS, the Ephrata ReUzit Stores and at Landis Homes where they moved in 2011.

Lowell and his family loved travel, especially broadening the world of granddaughter Maria with special summer trips. Lowell enjoyed sports, including in later years his golfing buddies and the Pennsylvania Dutchmen fantasy golf club. As a grateful resident of Landis Homes, the Pathways Institute classes, swimming pool and many other activities allowed him to continue to lead a full life.

Lowell is survived by daughter Cheryl (Brent Kaufman), Grafton, VT, son Steve (Barbara Perry), Akron, PA, and granddaughter Maria (Gie Park), Millersville, PA. His living siblings include brothers John (Luetta) of Fairview, MI and Reuel (Joy) of Goshen, IN and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Douglas Keith; his parents; siblings and their spouses Carl (Janet) Detweiler, Mary (Lawrence) Wyse and Lucille Detweiler, all of Michigan, and sister-in-law Sara Detweiler of Goshen, IN.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, May 3, 2025 at Akron Mennonite Church with family visitation before and after the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be designated in Lowell’s memory to Mennonite Disaster Service, 583 Airport Road Lititz, PA 17543 or the Landis Homes Caring Fund, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, PA 17543.
